TWO OLD BUCKS

143: Dave's Adventures in Norway

David and Del Episode 143

Dave flies from Brussels to Oslo via Helsinki and takes a train into town where he crashes at the hotel after a 9pm dinner. They didn't tell him a band was setting up and playing from 10 pm to 3 am, possibly outside his door. The next morning it is back to the train station for a 6.5 hour ride to Trondheim. Train ride was beautiful, gaining elevation to cross the mountain range and the back down to sea level in Trondheim.

From Trondheim, Dave boards the Hurtigruten Polarlys running up and down the coast.  They pass the Arctic Circle and celebrate with hot rum and fish soup doled out by the captain, followed by ice water on the head ceremony the next morning.

During a stop at Bodø, Dave does an excursion that includes a stop at
Saltstraumen, the world's strongest tidal current.

The ship passes through Trollfjorden, a very narrow fjord. Amazing.

Dave disembarks after two nights at Tromsø, where the ship almost leaves with his luggage still onboard. He takes the Fjellheisen cable car for a spectacular view of the city.

A short flight takes Dave back to Bodø, where he finds the world's largest aluminum sailing ship docked. He does not get permission to come aboard.

There's more to come....
